TREATMENT OF THE SCHOOL READING ASSIGNMENT IN PRIMARY EDUCATION IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA AND THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA

Vesna Horvatovikj

n the theory of literature, the functions of literary works are most widely described according to the famous creed of Horace, “dolce” and “utile” (pleasant and useful), which means that a literary and artistic work should at the same time cause aesthetic pleasure, and be instructive. His creed should not be understood as an obligation that must be fulfilled either as a lesson to be learned, but only as an aesthetic seriousness of perception. When it is said that literature is a game, spontaneous entertainment, we feel that injustice has been inflicted on the artist’s care, his skill and imagination, and the seriousness and importance of every literary work. When it is said that literature is a "craft" or "skill," we feel that its aesthetic essence is deliberately neglected. Therefore, we must only describe the functions of literature as equal to the "dolce" and "utile" at the same time. Given the above, we can conclude that literary works offered as reading assignments contain didactic aspects that are the subject of our research.
